About this blog

It is so about the bike!

I'm Seamus Kelly and have been a cyclist since 1975 having ridden bikes since 1967 (age 6).

My blog title is a response to the well known book "It's not about the bike" by Lance Armstrong (turns out he was right, for him it wasn't just about the bike was it?). I've played on bikes, ridden them, mended them, raced on them, taught people to ride them, coached people to race them and had a load of fun - all of that was to do with bikes (unlike Armstrong I haven't cheated to go faster). So this blog is SO about the bike! I'm not over-impressed by carbon, titanium, aluminium or steel, they all make bikes that work. One bike isn't really faster than another, if it works don't knock it, if it isn't broken don't fix it. I don't think retro is chic and I don't hanker after the latest bike-tech. I'm not exactly a bike snob!

Bikes can be cool to look at, you may aspire to a brand, a style or a valuable object of desire, that's fine. I just like riding them, I like to go fast, I love to go slow, I love riding on-road and I love riding off-road. For nearly 50 years I've been having fun on bikes.

So yes "It is so about the bike!"

Why the blog?

I want to share the fun.
I want to share interesting bike related stuff.
I want to share useful bike related stuff.
I want to share silly bike related stuff.

The posts will each carry a label indicating the sort of information and pictures. Clicking on the labels on the sidebar will take you to a page with just that category of posts.

"On the Front" will carry news and events (with a special focus on Rochdale and surrounding areas).
"A Smile on Wheels" will carry images and entertaining items about bikes and cycling.
"Cyclists Dismount" will carry posts about what to do, how to do it, what not to do and some examples of crap road design and the sill things people do with signage.
"Back to Basics" will carry my own coaching advice, this is about the basics and, unless you are already racing at professional level, I'll tell you how you can get better without power outputs measurements, complicated nutritional systems or very fancy equipment.
"Reviews" will do just what it says on the tin. I've previously written reviews for use elsewhere and in similar vein to those I'll be adding reviews of cycling related equipment, events and places without any commercial pressure to influence my words. Honest reviews of the good or the bad (which to be honest are fairly rare these days but will be highlighted).

Copyright - All that I've written here is my own work and protected by copyright as are all images unless marked otherwise. If you want to use anything from the blog please feel free to ask and with the proper accreditation I'm quite likely to say yes - but please don't use my work without permission, it isn't nice, frankly its rude, and it isn't necessary.
